Carols On The Green
Saturday 16th December 2023Children from Warden House Primary School stole the show at the annual Walmer Town Council Carols by Torchlight Concert held on Walmer Green on Saturday. Over thirty singers from the school wowed the audience, first with their rendition of the Coventry Carol and later with a delightful performance of Santa Claus is Coming.
For many the highlight of the evening was the reading by Warden House pupils Ava Williamson and Joel Alton of a poem, setting out the way in which Jesus changed the world for the better and left a legacy of standards for people to help others by.
Other highlights were a re-creation of the first ever performance of Silent Night in the original German from singer Jake St Ange and Lynda Barratt-Mercer's performance of O Holy Night. Music was provided by the White Cliffs Symphonic Winds led by their conductor Graham Harvey.
The Rev. Canon Seth Cooper and Lynda Barrett-Mercer co-hosted the event.
Hundreds of people attended the concert, which was held next to the Sea Café on Walmer Green, a location which added to the enjoyment of the concert for many who were able to enjoy hot chocolate, mulled wine and other warming treats.
Mrs Marguerite Beard-Gould, Chair of Walmer Town Council's Events Committee, said:
"It was wonderful to see all the hard work that the children have done come to such a
successful conclusion. They added enormously to this event which has become a highlight of the Christmas season for the people of Walmer.”
"As well as the children I would also like to thank the staff at Warden House school led by headmaster Robert Hackett for all the support they have given to the children on their musical journey. "
The poem read by Ava and Joel:
Dear God,
Back then, at the first Christmas
You knew about the shepherds working late at night,
You knew about the travellers following the light,
You knew about the crowds with their hopes and fears,
You knew about the stable and poor Mary’s tears,
So right now because of Christmas
You know about outsiders who feel they don’t belong,
You know about the stranger who speaks another tongue,
You know about the exile, who’s forced to leave her home,
You know about the foreigner who feels so much alone,
You know about the poor whom nobody will know,
You know about the puzzled who feel they’ve far to go,
You bring them close in Jesus, each specially loved by him,
You turn things inside out and bring outsiders in.
