Carols On The Green

Saturday 16th December 2023

Children from Warden House Primary School stole the show at the annual Walmer Town Council Carols by Torchlight Concert held on Walmer Green on Saturday. Over thirty singers from the school wowed the audience, first with their rendition of the Coventry Carol and later with a delightful performance of Santa Claus is Coming.

For many the highlight of the evening was the reading by Warden House pupils Ava Williamson and Joel Alton of a poem, setting out the way in which Jesus changed the world for the better and left a legacy of standards for people to help others by.

Other highlights were a re-creation of the first ever performance of Silent Night in the original German from singer Jake St Ange and Lynda Barratt-Mercer's performance of O Holy Night. Music was provided by the White Cliffs Symphonic Winds led by their conductor Graham Harvey.

The Rev. Canon Seth Cooper and Lynda Barrett-Mercer co-hosted the event.

Hundreds of people attended the concert, which was held next to the Sea Café on Walmer Green, a location which added to the enjoyment of the concert for many who were able to enjoy hot chocolate, mulled wine and other warming treats.

Mrs Marguerite Beard-Gould, Chair of Walmer Town Council's Events Committee, said:

"It was wonderful to see all the hard work that the children have done come to such a

successful conclusion. They added enormously to this event which has become a highlight of the Christmas season for the people of Walmer.”

"As well as the children I would also like to thank the staff at Warden House school led by headmaster Robert Hackett for all the support they have given to the children on their musical journey. "

The poem read by Ava and Joel:

Dear God,

Back then, at the first Christmas

You knew about the shepherds working late at night,

You knew about the travellers following the light,

You knew about the crowds with their hopes and fears,

You knew about the stable and poor Mary’s tears,

So right now because of Christmas

You know about outsiders who feel they don’t belong,

You know about the stranger who speaks another tongue,

You know about the exile, who’s forced to leave her home,

You know about the foreigner who feels so much alone,

You know about the poor whom nobody will know,

You know about the puzzled who feel they’ve far to go,

You bring them close in Jesus, each specially loved by him,

You turn things inside out and bring outsiders in.

Walmer Bank Holiday Brocante

Monday 28th August 2023

This year’s traditional August bank holiday Brocante organised by Walmer Town Council was the most successful ever with over five thousand people flocking to Walmer Green.

The event was so well attended that several stallholders sold out early and enjoyed the opportunity to visit other stalls.

The bargains available on the one hundred plus stalls taking part in the event ranged from handmade jewellery to artisan soaps, from antique furnishings to collectibles and from clothes stalls to handmade, up cycled and antique furniture.

One of the highlights of the day was the delight of a visitor to the free antique valuation service provided by the Canterbury Auction Galleries, who discovered that a mantle clock owned by the family could be worth over seven thousand pounds at auction.

The Brocante is organised each year by the council’s Events Committee, supported by volunteers from the community and the income raised is used to fund the much-loved Summer Children’s Festival in July and the Christmas ‘Carols on The Green’ celebration of Christmas.

Chairman of Walmer Town Council's Events Committee, Mrs Marguerite Beard-Gould said: “This has been our best year ever and, from the positive response from visitors and the stallholders who are already booking for 2024, next year will be even better.”

Cllr Trevor Bond, Chairman of Walmer Town Council said: “The bank holiday weather was kind to us, and the Brocante thronging with people on the Green made a truly picturesque sight for the many visitors to the area.”

Children's Festival With Kites

Saturday 2nd July 2023

Once again saw the hugely successful return of Walmer Town Council’s Children’s Festival with Kites held on Saturday, 2nd July.

Councillor Mrs Marguerite Beard-Gould, chairman of the Council’s Events Committee expressed how successful this years event had been attracting approximately 4,000 people.

“This event has developed yearly and become increasingly popular (unfortunately not being held for the last two year’s due to Covid restrictions).

The addition this year of Deal Music and Arts – bringing along the fabulous Rebecca Robinson and the Railway Swing Band and The Junk Orchestra as well as the brilliant Kent Kite Flyers; a circus skills workshop; face painting and children’s craft lessons created a fabulous free event for local families to enjoy.”

Councillors from the Town Council were present to make and lend out kites to children attending so that they could learn for themselves the joys of kite flying.

Kent Kite Flyers who provide the giant kites including a giant Crab, Manta Ray and teddy bears were present and once again provided a spectacular display along the beach.

We look forward to bringing this event back again next year.

The addition of Deal Radio, bringing both music and interviews to the festival, brought a new dimension to the event. We can only thank those who attended from across Deal and Dover and beyond for their efforts during the weekend.”
